High-Speed Train (Best Overall)
For most travelers, the high-speed train is the best way to travel from Beijing to Hangzhou. G-trains depart from Beijing South Railway Station and arrive at Hangzhou East Railway Station in just 4.5 to 6.5 hours, depending on the number of stops. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes from early morning until evening, giving you plenty of flexibility.
Why is the train better than flying for a journey this long? Three reasons. First, you skip the airport — Beijing South is on the metro, you can arrive 30 minutes before departure, and there is no baggage check-in theater. Second, you go city center to city center, not from Daxing (PKX) which is 46 km south of Beijing to Xiaoshan (HGH) which is 27 km east of Hangzhou. Third, you can work, eat, and move around freely on the train — the seats are spacious, there is a power outlet at every seat, and the ride is smooth enough to use a laptop.
Ticket Prices & Classes
| Class | Price (CNY) | Journey Time | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second Class | ¥550 - 630 | 4.5 - 6.5 hrs | 3+2 seating, comfortable |
| First Class | ¥890 - 1,010 | 4.5 - 6.5 hrs | 2+2 seating, wider seats |
| Business Class | ¥1,750 - 1,850 | 4.5 - 6.5 hrs | Lie-flat pods, lounge access |
Pro Tip: Book the Fastest G-Train
Not all G-trains are equal. Look for trains numbered G1 through G50 — these are flagship services with fewer stops and a journey time under 5 hours. Trains like the G33 or G45 make more stops and take closer to 6.5 hours. Trip.com clearly shows the journey time for each train, so pick accordingly.
Flight (Fastest)
Flying from Beijing to Hangzhou takes 2 to 2.5 hours in the air. The main carriers are Air China, China Eastern, and Hainan Airlines, with ticket prices ranging from ¥500 to 1,500 depending on how far in advance you book. Departures are from either Beijing Capital (PEK) or the newer Beijing Daxing (PKX), and all flights land at Hangzhou Xiaoshan (HGH).
When does flying make sense? If you are already at or near the airport — for example, if you are connecting from an international flight at PEK and want to continue to Hangzhou without entering Beijing. Or if your schedule is extremely tight and every hour counts. But for most point-to-point travelers, the total door-to-door time of flying (travel to airport + 1.5h check-in + 2h flight + baggage claim + travel from HGH to the city) adds up to around 5 to 6 hours — the same as the train, but with far more hassle.
Daxing Airport (PKX) Caution
Beijing Daxing is a stunning architectural marvel, but it is 46 km south of central Beijing. Reaching it from the city center takes at least an hour by metro or taxi. If you fly from Daxing, your total journey time is likely longer than taking the train from Beijing South, which is centrally located on Metro Line 4.
Overnight Sleeper Train
The overnight D-train sleeper is a clever option if you want to save on a hotel night and wake up in Hangzhou. These trains depart Beijing in the evening (typically around 19:00-21:00) and arrive in Hangzhou the next morning (around 07:00-09:00), taking roughly 12 to 14 hours. Tickets cost ¥350 to 900 depending on the berth type.
There are two main berth types. A Soft Sleeper compartment has four bunks (two upper, two lower) with a locking door, clean bedding, a reading light, and a power outlet. It costs about ¥700-900 and is comfortable enough to get a decent night's sleep. A Hard Sleeper has six open bunks with thinner mattresses — it costs ¥350-500 but is significantly less private and comfortable.
Book a Soft Sleeper lower bunk — worth the extra ¥200 for privacy, comfort, and being able to sit up without hitting your head.
Bring earplugs and an eye mask — even in a soft sleeper, corridor noise and early-morning announcements can disturb light sleepers.
Pack snacks and water — dining cars exist but tend to close early. Convenience stores at Beijing South have a good selection.
Wake up for arrival — the train conductor will knock on your door about 30 minutes before Hangzhou, but set your own alarm just in case.
Why Choose the Sleeper?
The sleeper train saves you one night of hotel accommodation (¥300-800 in Hangzhou) and gives you a full day in Hangzhou upon arrival. If you book a soft sleeper, you effectively "travel while you sleep," arriving refreshed at Hangzhou Station (Chengzhan), which is only 2 km from West Lake.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to fly or take the train from Beijing to Hangzhou?
For most travelers, the high-speed train is better. Door-to-door time is about the same as flying (5-6 hours total), but the train is more comfortable, has no baggage restrictions, and puts you directly in Hangzhou's city center instead of 27 km away at the airport.
Can I book a Beijing-Hangzhou train on Trip.com?
Yes. Trip.com accepts international credit cards and shows all available trains in English. You can book up to 15 days in advance. During Chinese holidays (especially Spring Festival and October Golden Week), book as early as possible — tickets sell out within minutes of release.
What is the difference between G-trains and D-trains?
G-trains (Gaotie) are the fastest, reaching 300-350 km/h on dedicated high-speed tracks. D-trains (Dongche) are slightly slower at 200-250 km/h and may share tracks with conventional trains. For the Beijing-Hangzhou route, G-trains take 4.5-6.5 hours while D-trains are mostly overnight sleepers taking 12+ hours.
Are there direct flights from Beijing Daxing to Hangzhou?
Yes. China Eastern, China Southern, and Xiamen Airlines all operate daily flights from PKX to HGH. Flight time is about 2 hours. However, given Daxing's distance from central Beijing, total journey time is around 5-6 hours, which is comparable to the train.
