Overview

If West Lake is Hangzhou's polished jewel, Xixi Wetland is its wild soul. Just 5 kilometers west of the city center, this 1,150-hectare national wetland park is a sprawling labyrinth of canals, ponds, marshes, and forested islands that offers a completely different side of Hangzhou — one of reeds swaying in the breeze, wooden boats gliding through narrow waterways, and traditional waterside villages where life moves at the pace of the water.

Established as China's first national wetland park, Xixi preserves a landscape that has existed for over 1,800 years. The name "Xixi" means "West Creek," and the area has been celebrated in poetry since the Tang Dynasty. Unlike the manicured beauty of West Lake, Xixi feels raw, peaceful, and wonderfully unpolished. On a misty morning, with egrets fishing in the shallows and the distant sound of a boatman's song echoing across the water, it is one of the most atmospheric places in China.

The park is also a haven for wildlife. Over 180 species of birds have been recorded here, including kingfishers, herons, and the rare Chinese merganser. In spring and autumn, the wetland is a crucial stopover point for migratory birds traveling the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

How to Explore

Xixi is large, and the best way to experience it is from the water. There are three main ways to explore:

OptionPriceDurationBest For
Electric Boat Tour¥60 (extra)~1 hourFirst-time visitors, families, covering the most ground
Rowing Boat¥100 / hourFlexible (1-2 hrs)Couples, photographers, peaceful experience
Walking TrailsFree (with entry)2-4 hoursHikers, budget travelers, bird watchers

The electric boat tour is the most popular option and follows a circuit that stops at the park's major highlights. Boats depart regularly from the main dock and include a recorded guide (Chinese only, but the scenery speaks for itself). You can hop off at any stop, explore, and catch the next boat — making it an efficient way to see the park.

The hand-rowed boats are more intimate and romantic. Boatmen (and women) in traditional blue cotton jackets pole through narrow backwaters that the larger electric boats cannot reach. It is the best way to experience the quiet heart of the wetland. Negotiate the route with your boatman before departing.

Best Areas of the Park

Autumn Snow Pavilion (秋雪庵)

Despite the name, this is not about snow — it is about the white reed flowers that blanket the wetlands in autumn, looking like freshly fallen snow. The pavilion itself is a graceful two-story structure on a small island, reached by a winding causeway. From the upper floor, you get a sweeping view of the reed beds and the distant hills. This is the most photographed spot in Xixi.

Misty Water Village (烟水渔庄)

A restored traditional fishing village that showcases what life was like for the families who lived in Xixi for generations before it became a park. You can see traditional fishing tools, visit a working smokehouse, and sample local specialties like Xixi fish soup. On weekends, there are demonstrations of traditional crafts.

Plum Blossom Island (梅竹山庄)

From February to March, this area erupts in a sea of pink and white plum blossoms — one of the best plum blossom displays in eastern China. The fragrance is intoxicating, and the paths winding through the blooming trees are magical. Even outside plum blossom season, the bamboo groves and pavilions here are worth visiting.

Gaozhuang Garden (高庄)

A free Qing-dynasty villa garden hidden in Xixi's free-access zone — and one of Hangzhou's best-kept secrets. Built in 1657 by Gao Shiqi, a scholar favored by Emperor Kangxi (who visited six times), the garden merges classical Jiangnan architecture with Xixi's wetland waterways. White walls, dark tiles, and near-zero crowds make it the best spot in Hangzhou for atmospheric photography and quiet contemplation. No Xixi entry ticket required — walk in from Huawu Metro Station. Xixi is a year-round destination, but each season offers something different:

Visitor Tips

Essential Advice

Bring insect repellent in summer. Xixi is a wetland, and mosquitoes are abundant from May through October. Apply repellent before entering and reapply after a few hours. Long sleeves and pants help significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Xixi Wetland worth visiting if I have limited time?

If you only have one day in Hangzhou, prioritize West Lake and Lingyin Temple. If you have two or more days, Xixi is absolutely worth a half-day. It offers a completely different experience from the lake — wilder, quieter, and more immersive.

Can I visit Xixi in the rain?

Yes — and it is actually more atmospheric in light rain. The mist rising off the water, the sound of rain on the boat roof, and the deep greens of the wetland vegetation create a scene straight out of a Chinese painting. Bring a rain jacket and waterproof shoes. The electric boats are covered, so you stay dry.

Are there English signs and guides?

Signs throughout the park are bilingual (Chinese and English). The electric boat commentary is Chinese-only, but staff at the ticket office speak basic English. The park map available at the entrance is in English and is adequate for navigation.
